Hava Nagila is a Jewish folk song that was composed in 1918 to celebrate the Balfour Declaration, which expressed British support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Idelsohn was a musicologist and composer who was passionate about collecting and preserving Jewish folk music. He composed Hava Nagila based on a traditional Hassidic nigun (wordless melody).
Hava Nagila quickly became popular in Zionist circles and was soon sung at celebrations throughout the Jewish world. It became especially popular in Israel after the establishment of the state in 1948. Today, Hava Nagila is one of the most recognizable Jewish songs in the world and is sung at celebrations of all kinds, including weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and Jewish holidays.
