A True Masterpiece

This first movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s ” A Little Night Music” (Eine Kleine Nachtmusik) is a joyful musical adventure that’s incredibly catchy and fun to listen to.

Mozart composed this piece in 1787.

It is believed that he wrote it for his own personal use, (he played violin well, in addition to piano) rather than for a specific commission. The exact purpose for which he composed this piece is not entirely clear, but it’s thought that it might have been intended for a social gathering or a private performance.

There is no specific record of the original performers, as the piece was not published or performed publicly during Mozart’s lifetime. However, it was likely performed by a small ensemble of musicians, which could have included string instruments such as violins, violas, cellos, and a double bass, given the nature of the composition.

Mozart was known for his remarkable speed in composing music. It’s believed that he composed this piece relatively quickly, possibly within a matter of days or weeks. Mozart had an incredible ability to create music rapidly, often working out compositions in his head before putting them onto paper. This remarkable skill allowed him to produce a vast amount of high-quality music in a relatively short period of time.

Although the violin has been given most of the melody in the original composition, this catchy tune lends itself to expression on a flute.

Our arrangement substitutes a piano for the string ensemble, thus ensuring that the beauty of Mozart’s music is accessible for flute players and their audiences.

The flute has about 80% of the melody; the piano provides rhythm and harmonic accompaniment all the way through, with the melody given to it about 20% of the time.

Although not a virtuoso showpiece, The Entertainer does require a fair amount of technique and experience on the flute.
